Ball mill is an important equipment for producing cement and grinding slurry in mines. What works on the grinding medium is the grinding body loaded inside the ball mill.


The grinding body in the mill is divided into two parts: one part is the steel ball, also called mill grinding balls, and the other part is the lining plate. The steel balls used in current ball mills are also divided into two categories, one is forged steel balls, and the other is cast steel balls.


Due to the difference in production process between forged steel balls and cast steel balls, the chemical composition and mechanical properties of the products are quite different.


The so-called forging is to cut a steel billet of a certain composition into a specified size, then heat and soften it at high temperature, and then use mechanical tools to roll or forge it into a round shape. The product produced by this process is a forged steel ball.

The so-called casting is to put the recycled steel and the element alloys that need to be added according to the product quality requirements into a smelting furnace for smelting. The qualified molten iron is then poured into the mold cavity and cooled into a spherical shape. The product produced in this way is cast mill grinding balls.

In terms of the wear resistance of the product, due to the requirements of the forging process, the selected steel billet for forged steel balls must have good plasticity. To have good plasticity, the carbon content of the steel billet must not be too high, so that the forged product without the hard phase that can resist abrasive wear, the wear rate is relatively fast when the ball mill is used.


cast mill grinding balls add a large amount of alloying elements, especially carbon and chromium. These two elements combine to form a hard phase in the cast ball. This hard phase can block the movement of hard materials during abrasive wear. The furrows formed on the surface of the cast ball can reduce the loss of material on the surface of the cast ball and achieve good anti-wear effect.
